This collection is based on the " Matsukata Collection ". Matsukata Kojiro (1865-1950) who was president of Kawasaki Dockyard Company acquired many Impressionist paintings and Auguste Rodin's sculptures in 1910s-20s. Part of the works were stored in France after the World War II, in 1959 French Government returned many of them to Japan. To display the works, this museum was established.
The main building was designed by Le Corbusier.
